About this plugin
Sound Particles' GrainDust is a granular synthesis engine that distinguishes itself through four independent, fully-parameterizable layers capable of generating up to 100 simultaneous grains. The architecture allows producers to import custom samples or draw from a library of 500 curated sources, then sculpt them across granular parameters including rate, density, size, continuity, and detune. The grain envelope system provides control over both individual grain shape and temporal distribution, while custom envelope generators and LFOs with over 70 waveform modifiers enable sophisticated modulation across each layer.
The plugin's technical approach combines flexible sample range selection - adjustable globally or per envelope stage - with multiple playback modes: forward, reverse, forward + reverse, mirror, and smoothed variations. A dedicated arpeggiator with seven modes and sequencer parameter automation streamlines rhythmic construction. The spatial audio implementation deserves particular attention, leveraging HRTF-based 3D panning with azimuth and elevation control, custom SOFA file support, and dedicated movement modifiers that transform static textures into orbiting or rotating spatial events.

GrainDust occupies a compelling position within the granular synthesis landscape, balancing deep parameter control with intuitive workflow features like preset-based spatial positioning and multiple 3D visualization modes. It serves producers and sound designers seeking granular textures with precise spatial dimensionality, though the learning curve and creative potential suggest broader appeal among experienced practitioners comfortable navigating complex synthesis architectures. The combination of granular flexibility and immersive spatial rendering makes it particularly valuable for immersive audio, film scoring, and experimental electronic music production.
