About this plugin
Sonnox's Envolution represents a sophisticated approach to envelope manipulation by separating transient and sustain processing into independent, frequency-dependent channels. Rather than treating the entire signal uniformly, the plugin lets you reshape attack characteristics while independently sculpting the body and decay of your source material. This dual-axis control proves particularly valuable on complex sources where traditional compression or gating falls short.
The core appeal lies in its frequency targeting modes. The tilt option provides broad, musical shaping across the spectrum, while focus mode narrows processing to specific frequency bands, offering surgical precision. This combination accommodates both mixing aesthetics and corrective work without requiring multiple instances.

Envolution excels on percussive material, drums and piano where transient clarity and sustain character significantly impact the final sound. The sustain section functions effectively as a creative gate, capable of both enhancement and reduction depending on your needs. The DIFF button, which isolates the processed signal, proves invaluable for parallel processing workflows and problem-solving.
The included warmth control adds harmonic character while managing output levels, addressing a practical concern when heavy processing risks unwanted artifacts or excessive brightness. Preset selection is robust, providing accessible entry points without sacrificing deep customization.
While envelope shapers occupy a niche territory, Envolution's frequency-dependent architecture distinguishes it from simpler transient designers. It sits between general-purpose dynamics tools and specialized transient processors, making it particularly relevant for engineers seeking nuanced control beyond conventional compression. The plugin's clean, phase-coherent processing maintains transparency when subtlety is required, while its extreme settings enable unconventional sound design when creativity demands it.
