About this plugin
Sonnox's Oxford Dynamics brings console-grade dynamics processing to the DAW with the engineering pedigree of Sony's legendary OXF-R3 mixing console. The plugin consolidates five processing stages - gate, expander, compressor, limiter, and 2-band sidechain EQ - into a single, cohesive tool that handles everything from transparent vocal control to aggressive bus compression.
The compressor section offers three distinct algorithms: Normal for transparent gain reduction, Classic for a more colored response, and Linear for precision work with minimal artifacts. Variable soft knee adjustment (0 to -20 dBr in 5 dB increments) provides flexibility in how the compression engages, essential for matching the character of different source material. The gate and expander deliver the fast, clean operation expected from professional console hardware, while the limiter ensures reliable peak control without pumping or distortion artifacts.

What distinguishes Oxford Dynamics is its integrated 2-band sidechain EQ, allowing you to filter the signal feeding the compressor's detector independently from the main audio path. This proves invaluable when tackling frequency-specific issues - taming vocal sibilance or bass rumble without affecting the tonal balance of the compressed signal. The warmth control adds optional tube-like harmonic saturation for presence and character when needed, though the plugin's default sonic signature remains notably clean and artifact-free.
Oxford Dynamics appeals to mixing engineers seeking a single, capable dynamics processor for tracking, mixing, and mastering duties. Its console heritage, multiple compression types, and sidechain capabilities make it a serious alternative to multi-band plugins, particularly suited to those valuing transparent, reliable control with genuine character options.
