About this plugin
The SSL LMC+ is a specialized dynamics processor that captures the distinctive character of the SSL 4000E console's Listen Mic Compressor, the hardware responsible for countless gated-reverb drum sounds that defined 1980s record production. Rather than recreate a conventional compressor, SSL has engineered a tool with fixed attack and release curves specifically optimized for drum processing, making it inherently suited to aggressive, transient-heavy material.
What distinguishes the LMC+ from standard compressors is its operational philosophy. The fixed compression envelope strips away parameter tweaking, allowing engineers to focus on gain staging and mix balance instead. This constraint paradoxically becomes a strength for those seeking the characteristic 80s drum aesthetic without disappearing down rabbit holes of attack and release milliseconds.

The plugin extends the original hardware with practical modern additions: external sidechain routing lets you compress one source while triggering from another, while variable highpass and lowpass filters enable frequency-selective gain reduction. The Scoop function phase-inverts the compressed signal for creative parallel processing possibilities, while Split engages a bandpass-subtraction mode for even more experimental applications. A wet/dry mix control facilitates transparent parallel compression.
The LMC+ will appeal most to engineers working in genres where aggressive, pumping dynamics serve the production. It's equally at home on bass, vocals, and mix bus material as it is on drums. For producers specifically chasing period-correct 80s aesthetics or those seeking a compressor that prioritizes character over surgical precision, the LMC+ delivers authenticity backed by SSL's engineering credibility.
