About this plugin
The SSL Blitzer is a multi-character compressor that synthesizes the sonic signatures of three distinct hardware lineages: the FET-based aggression of the 1176, the smooth optical response of the LA-2A, and traditional VCA compression. Rather than attempting to emulate any single device, Blitzer offers ten compression curves across matching ratios, each calibrated to deliver a particular tonal character and response envelope. This approach grants producers meaningful variation without requiring multiple instances or constant parameter hunting.
The plugin's utility extends beyond basic level control. The Drive control introduces harmonic saturation reminiscent of tape and transformer coloration, warming sources without obvious distortion or forcing aggressive makeup gain. The Transients control modifies attack behavior independently of ratio selection, addressing a real workflow problem: most compressors force a choice between transparent and aggressive response, but Blitzer decouples these qualities. The detection sidechain incorporates a high-pass filter specifically designed to prevent low-frequency rumble and kick drum thump from unnecessarily triggering compression on drum busses - a practical feature that rewards careful implementation.

The BLITZ mode engages all controls simultaneously for a maximalist limiting character suitable for dramatic effect. Parallel compression mixing is supported natively, eliminating the need for external routing. Auto Gain compensation prevents the pumping dynamics that often require manual level adjustment between presets.
For mix engineers and tracking specialists, Blitzer occupies a genuine middle ground between transparent compression and colored tone-shaping. Its range spans from surgical vocal taming to dramatic room microphone enhancement, making it a genuinely versatile utility compressor for contemporary production work.
