About this plugin
The Tube-Tech CL 1B remains one of the most sonically transparent optical compressors available, and Softube's Mk II iteration preserves this character while modernizing the signal path. Built on advances in component modeling and DSP architecture developed over a decade, the Mk II delivers the warm, musical gain reduction that made the original a hip-hop and pop staple, with notably improved clarity and reduced digital artifacts compared to earlier emulations.
The optical design imparts a gentle, logarithmic response that resists the aggressive pumping of VCA designs, making it exceptionally forgiving on vocals, bass, and acoustic sources. The ratio sweetspot sits in the 4:1 to 8:1 range, where it excels at taming dynamic peaks without audibly squashing material. Attack and release times are musical rather than surgical, encouraging a natural sounding compression that blends rather than dominates the mix.

What distinguishes the Mk II is its usability in contemporary workflows. The included Generation Switch allows A-B comparison between Mk I and Mk II versions, useful for understanding sonic differences or matching legacy sessions. The modernized interface provides precise parameter control without sacrificing tactile immediacy, and the higher resolution graphics make metering legible at any zoom level.
This compressor serves producers and engineers across genres who prioritize musicality over transparency. While not a surgical dynamic tool, it excels precisely where its vintage lineage suggests: smoothing and warming sources that benefit from colored, gentle compression. For vocal-centric productions and bass-heavy music, it remains genuinely difficult to surpass.
