About

Product Overview

Softube's emulation of the 4ms Spectral Multiband Resonator brings a genuinely capable multiband processor into Softube Modular with remarkable fidelity to the hardware original. The SMR divides the audio spectrum into six independently resonant bandpass filters, each locked to a twenty-note scale that spans Western tunings, alternate temperaments, gamelan scales, and microtonal systems. This architecture makes it exceptionally versatile: you can deploy it as an additive synthesis engine, vocoder, multiband dynamics processor, spectral analyzer, or CV-driven quantizer and arpeggiator.

The sonic character is where the SMR distinguishes itself from conventional parametric or graphic EQs. Each filter channel exhibits resonant behavior - strike the filters with impulses and they ring like struck marimba bars, making it excellent for drum synthesis and percussive textures. Sweep the filters across scales via CV and you unlock moving harmonic structures and chord progressions that feel organic rather than quantized. The architecture also excels at analysis, allowing you to extract spectral information from incoming audio for downstream processing.

Where competing tools offer broader parametric control, the SMR's constraint - being locked to musical scales - becomes its strength, particularly for harmonic synthesis and quantization tasks. The modest CPU footprint means you can instantiate multiple units across a patch without penalty. With seventy-five included presets covering vocoding, filtering, remixing, and synthesis applications, the learning curve is manageable despite the apparent complexity. It's an essential tool for sound designers working at the intersection of synthesis and signal processing.
