About this plugin
Softube's Model 80 is a faithful software recreation of the 1980 Prophet-5, the foundational polyphonic synthesizer that defined the sound of pop and rock through the '80s and beyond. The plugin models the original's five-voice architecture, analog oscillators, and state-variable filters with circuit-level accuracy, capturing both the sonic character and the specific interaction behavior of the hardware.
The modeling approach addresses the subtle but crucial aspects that distinguished the Prophet-5 from its contemporaries. The five voices respond to velocity and aftertouch with the organic responsiveness of VCAs driven by envelope generators, and the interaction between voices - including tuning drift and modulation bleed - reinforces the human, slightly imperfect quality that made the original compelling. The included 40 factory presets provide authentic period reference points while demonstrating the synth's capability across bass, lead, pad, and effect-oriented territories.

Operationally, the plugin functions as both a standard instrument and as individual modules for Modular workflows, offering flexibility for different production environments. The front panel replicates the original's programmer interface, making sound recall and editing intuitive for users familiar with hardware synthesis.
For producers working in electronic, pop, and experimental music, Model 80 provides access to a historically significant sound palette without the hardware's maintenance demands or expense. Among current Prophet-5 emulations, Softube's version stands as the most meticulous recreation, prioritizing sonic authenticity and circuit behavior over simplified usability. It's essential for period-accurate production and indispensable for those seeking the specific tonal character that defined decades of recorded music.
