About this plugin
Icons: The Compressor Collection stands as Softube's definitive statement on classic compression, bundling accurate emulations of three foundational dynamics processors that shaped modern recording. The FET Compressor Mk II delivers the fastest attack available in hardware form, ideal for controlling transients on drums and aggressive sources. The OPTO Compressor brings the smooth, musical character of tube-based optical design, excelling on vocals and bass where transparent control matters. The VCA Compressor rounds out the set with surgical precision and the snappy character that made it the go-to choice for snare drums and drum bus processing.
What distinguishes Icons from competing collections is Softube's two-decade track record of hardware modeling partnerships with premium manufacturers. Rather than approximating these circuits, Softube worked from the original designs themselves, yielding compressors with authentic sonic DNA. Each plugin captures the interaction between gain reduction topology and the harmonic coloration inherent to its source hardware.

The modern additions justify the software-only approach. Independent drive controls allow independent saturation shaping from gain reduction mechanics, letting engineers dial in desired color without committing to a specific compression ratio. Stereo linking modes accommodate both linked and unlinked processing chains. The sidechain section enables frequency-conscious control that hardware versions simply cannot offer.
Icons serves experienced mix engineers and mastering professionals who recognize that compression character matters more than parameter count. This is working gear, not nostalgic recreation. Whether controlling transient chaos or adding cohesion to a vocal chain, these three processors handle the jobs they were originally designed for with unmistakable authority.
