About this plugin
The FG-Stress stands as Slate Digital's faithful digital translation of the Empirical Labs Distressor, arguably the most versatile dynamics processor ever designed. What makes this plugin essential is its commitment to accurately modeling the Distressor's unconventional architecture, where each compression ratio employs a fundamentally different circuit topology rather than a simple ratio switch across a unified design.
This approach yields genuine sonic differentiation across the ratio settings. The lower ratios behave with the smooth, transparent character of tube-based limiters, while mid-range settings deliver the punchy, fast-acting response of VCA designs, and higher ratios access the organic, musical knee of optical compressors. The modeling captures these tonal shifts with enough precision to make the FG-Stress genuinely useful across mix duties, from controlling vocals and bass to shaping drums and parallel compression chains.

The plugin integrates seamlessly within Slate Digital's Virtual Mix Rack ecosystem, allowing users to build sophisticated processing chains with complementary tools. For engineers familiar with the hardware original, the interface will feel immediately intuitive. For those encountering the Distressor's design philosophy for the first time, the FG-Stress provides an affordable entry point to explore its problem-solving capabilities.
The real value emerges when working on material requiring both surgical control and character coloration. Its effectiveness on sources needing to sit forward in a mix while maintaining natural dynamics makes it indispensable for professional mixing and mastering work. It's not a specialty tool; it's a workhorse that demands regular rotation in any serious mixing setup.
