About this plugin
Slate Digital's Custom Opto represents a thoughtful evolution of optical compression design, delivering the smooth, musical character engineers have relied on for decades while adding modern flexibility to shape results quickly. The plugin's core strength lies in its simplified control set: Speed determines attack and release timing, Ratio adjusts gain reduction intensity, and a four-way Tone selector recontextualizes the compressed signal.
The tone modes reveal the plugin's real utility. Airy brightens the top end for vocals and drums needing presence without harshness. Smooth attenuates problematic frequencies, making it effective on sources with sibilance or proximity issues. Aggro introduces transient definition and punch, useful for drums and bass requiring articulation. Warm adds the harmonic coloration typical of vintage optical designs, flattering on mix bus and instrumentation. Rather than functioning as separate algorithms, these modes work as tonal lenses over a cohesive compression architecture.

Unlike complex multiband or digital processors, Custom Opto's appeal rests in decisive simplicity. It prioritizes musical results over feature count, making it particularly valuable in Virtual Mix Rack environments where space and cognitive load matter. For mixing engineers accustomed to hardware optical compressors, the plugin translates that tactile, responsive workflow into a plugin format without sacrificing the gentle knee and musical gain reduction behavior that defined classic units.
The plugin suits vocals, drums, instruments, and mix bus compression equally well. Experienced producers will appreciate both its straightforward operation and sufficient depth to justify regular use across multiple mix stages.
