About this plugin
The Herd is a parallel compression plugin that consolidates three distinct compression algorithms into a single interface, each selectable via mode toggle. The Opto engine delivers optical compression characteristics with smooth gain reduction curves, making it suitable for vocal tracks and mix bus application where transparency is valued. The VCA mode provides faster attack and release characteristics for transient-rich material like drums and percussion. The Devil mode introduces nonlinear saturation alongside compression, coloring the signal with harmonic distortion reminiscent of driven analog gear.
The plugin's core strength lies in its parallel compression architecture, allowing users to blend uncompressed signal with compressed output for tonal preservation and impact retention. Attack and release parameters offer sufficient range for both transparent gain riding and aggressive peak control. A tilt-style tone control adjusts the frequency balance between high and low frequencies, providing basic EQ integration without requiring sidechain processing setup.

The Wild switch engages behavior that Safari describes as "analog-style mayhem," introducing dynamic nonlinearity that results in less predictable gain reduction patterns. This approach appeals to engineers seeking character-driven compression rather than clinical dynamics control. Auto-gain compensation maintains consistent loudness as compression ratio increases, simplifying level management across different settings.
The Herd occupies middle ground between transparent dynamics tools and creative saturation plugins. It serves best in contexts where producers value sonic coloration and artistic flexibility over surgical precision. The three-mode architecture provides adequate versatility for tracking, mixing, and mastering applications, though the plugin's strength emerges most clearly on sources requiring both cohesion and attitude.
