About this plugin
Pulsar Audio's IPA 25 is a multi-circuit VCA compressor that bridges the gap between hardware emulation and plugin flexibility. The plugin centers on faithfully reproducing the detection characteristics of a classic VCA design - specifically its RMS averaging, ratio-dependent knee behavior, and program-dependent release - while adding modern conveniences that the original hardware couldn't offer.
What distinguishes the IPA 25 is its circuit topology switching. Rather than simply layering distortion onto a fixed compressor, the plugin lets you swap between four harmonic behaviors at the gain-reduction stage itself. The Clean setting provides transparent control suitable for mastering work. Original delivers the tonal signature of the source hardware. V-Mu adds tube-like saturation and compression bloom. N-Diode introduces the asymmetrical harmonic character of diode compression. You can change circuits mid-session without recalibrating settings, which streamlines workflow considerably.

Beyond circuit selection, the IPA 25 includes practical modern features: integrated sidechain EQ for frequency-conscious gain reduction, a built-in adaptive clipper and limiter, real-time visualization of compression behavior and detector response, and zero-latency operation for tracking with oversampling available for mixing duties.
The plugin serves mixing engineers, mastering professionals, and tracking engineers equally well. It's particularly valuable for those seeking both the predictable behavior of VCA compression and the tonal flexibility to adapt that behavior across different sources without reaching for multiple plugins. Among contemporary VCA emulations, the IPA 25 stands out for treating circuit selection as a legitimate mixing tool rather than a cosmetic afterthought.
