About this plugin
PSP Flare represents a genuinely novel approach to dynamic range control. Rather than pursuing the conventional compression model, it implements a probability-based algorithm rooted in psychoacoustic principles, designed to maintain perceived loudness consistency while preserving the natural dynamics listeners expect from quality audio. Developed in collaboration with post-production engineer Paolo Pasquariello, the plugin excels at solving a persistent mixing problem: transparent leveling without the pumping, breathing, or tonal coloration that heavy traditional compression introduces.
The technical architecture supports this philosophy effectively. A wide compression knee prevents the sudden gain reduction artifacts typical of harder-knee designs, while parallel peak and RMS detection modes accommodate different material characteristics. The lookahead function addresses transient overshoot intelligently, and optional automatic makeup gain removes a common workflow friction point. A brick wall limiter on the output provides clean ceiling protection without requiring excessive safety margins.

PSP Flare finds its strongest application in post-production environments where dialogue and effects must remain intelligible across varying playback systems and listening environments, but its utility extends into mix applications. It performs particularly well on dense arrangements where traditional compression would compromise cohesion, and on vocals where natural dynamics matter more than aggressive control.
The 64-bit double precision processing ensures clean filter characteristics across the frequency spectrum, eliminating cumulative errors in the sidechain circuitry. Among psychoacoustic and masking-based processors, Flare distinguishes itself through transparent operation and genuine loudness consistency without sacrificing perceived dynamics. For engineers seeking sophisticated dynamics management that doesn't announce itself, this plugin offers a compelling alternative to conventional approaches.
