About this plugin
Scaler 2 Modulation Masterclass is a comprehensive production course that systematically deconstructs the advanced harmonic workflows within Plugin Boutique's Scaler 2, a chord recognition and generation plugin that has become indispensable for producers working across multiple genres. Rather than treating modulation as an afterthought, this course positions key shifting and harmonic recontextualization as central compositional tools.
The curriculum methodically covers four distinct modulation modes - Progression Mode, Secondary Scale Mode, Modal Interchange, and additional techniques - each demonstrated through full production workflows in Neo-Soul, Pop, Indie Dance, and Drum & Bass contexts. This practical approach distinguishes the course from abstract music theory instruction. Each mode addresses specific compositional challenges: Progression Mode handles seamless key transitions across multiple instrumental parts, Secondary Scale Mode explores harmonic variation through secondary dominants, and Modal Interchange Mode develops borrowed chord techniques for rhythmic and melodic interest.

Instructor Rob walks through the complete process from initial harmonic ideation through arrangement, using Scaler 2 to sequence MIDI parts in Ableton Live. The workflows demonstrate how to layer multiple instances for coordinating organ, bass, and melodic elements while maintaining harmonic coherence across key modulations.
This course is particularly valuable for producers seeking to move beyond static chord progressions or those intimidated by advanced harmonic concepts. While not a replacement for music theory fundamentals, it provides immediately applicable techniques for expanding harmonic vocabulary and creating more sophisticated arrangements. For electronic and contemporary music producers, understanding these modulation strategies can substantially accelerate composition and add considerable depth to otherwise conventional progressions.
