About this plugin
Ableton Live 12's MIDI Generators represent a significant shift in pattern creation and melodic composition within the DAW environment. This Producertech masterclass, led by certified trainer Rob Jones, provides comprehensive instruction on four distinct generator tools: Rhythm, Stacks, Shape, and Seed. Each operates within the MIDI Editor's generator tab and functions as both a transformative and generative device for note data.
The Rhythm generator excels at percussive pattern creation, with intuitive controls for step length, pattern length, and density that establish the foundational vocabulary across all generators. The course methodically builds from basic drum patterns to sophisticated groove construction, with dedicated attention to velocity manipulation for realistic articulation. Stacks streamlines harmonic workflow by automating chord voicing and progression generation, reducing the cognitive load typically associated with harmonic arrangement. Shape and Seed target melodic generation, with Seed offering additional algorithmic sophistication for more complex harmonic contexts.

This masterclass is essential for producers seeking to expand their compositional toolkit beyond traditional MIDI sequencing. Rather than prescriptive automation or static patterns, these generators adapt dynamically to user input, enabling rapid iteration across multiple creative directions. The instruction progresses logically from foundational concepts to production-ready techniques, making it accessible for intermediate producers while offering depth for advanced users.
The course's strength lies in its practical approach, demonstrating real-world application rather than theoretical explanation. For anyone working in electronic music production, hip-hop, or experimental composition, understanding these tools represents a tangible productivity gain and creative catalyst within Live's native environment.
