About this plugin
The U2A represents a thoughtful modernization of the LA-2A optical compressor, one of the most sonically revered dynamics processors in recording history. Rather than simply emulating the circuit, NEOLD employed component-level modeling to capture the transformer coloration, opto cell behavior, and nonlinear saturation characteristics that defined the original hardware. The result is a plugin that translates the LA-2A's gentle, musical compression to digital workflows without sacrificing the tonal qualities that make hardware units prized for vocals, bass, and bus processing.
What distinguishes the U2A from other LA-2A emulations is its practical approach to expanding the original's capabilities. The Recovery control adjusts release times, making the compressor adaptable across sources where a true 2A's fixed knee would be limiting. A dedicated Drive knob allows independent saturation adjustment, adding harmonic color without affecting compression ratio or response. An R37 sidechain filter provides frequency-conscious compression, useful for taming problematic resonances before the opto cell responds.

The Aging parameter offers genuine sonic variation, continuously shifting character from a freshly serviced unit to a decades-old device. This acknowledges the reality that no two LA-2As sound identical, appealing to engineers who understand how component aging affects tonal character. Digital conveniences like Mix control, comparison snapshots, and an extensive preset library round out the feature set.
The U2A serves engineers and producers seeking authentic optical compression without the constraints of hardware-only designs. It occupies a middle ground between strict emulation and feature-creep, maintaining the LA-2A's minimalist philosophy while addressing real-world production requirements.
