About this plugin
Native Instruments and Softube have created a trio of compression emulations based on the most consequential dynamics processors ever built. Rather than pursuing novelty, this collection targets the three archetypes that defined professional compression: the fast FET, the optical leveler, and the VCA with attitude.
The VC 76 models a solid-state FET design with attack times in the sub-millisecond range, making it ideal for controlling transients without sacrificing presence. The VC 2A faithfully reproduces the optical characteristics of the vintage leveling compressor, delivering the transparent gain reduction that became the industry standard for lead vocals, bass, and delicate sources. The VC 160 captures VCA topology with enough nonlinearity to add color and subtle harmonic distortion, particularly effective on drums and bass where subtle saturation enhances attack.

What distinguishes this plugin from casual emulations is its attention to sidechain routing and parallel compression capabilities. These aren't afterthoughts but essential features that extend the utility of each compressor beyond straightforward tracking and mixing applications. The implementation allows for creative frequency-dependent compression and blending of wet and dry signals within a single interface.
Engineers and producers working in mixing, mastering, and production will recognize these tools immediately. The VC 76, VC 2A, and VC 160 remain reference standards because they respond naturally to source material and integrate seamlessly into any signal chain. This plugin offers authentic emulations of processors that have shaped professional recordings across every genre for decades. It's a foundational purchase for anyone serious about compression.
