About this plugin
Native Instruments' Hazy Days expansion delivers a curated collection of over 100 drum kits and sound libraries tailored specifically for hip hop and soul production. Rather than chasing novelty, the expansion focuses on the sonic architecture that defined 90s hip hop aesthetics, built from sampled live drums, piano, and synthesizers that were collectively processed through analog gear before integration into the MPC ecosystem.
The sonic character emphasizes warmth and compression artifacts typical of tape-saturated workflows. Each kit incorporates swing timing algorithms and chord progressions designed to sit comfortably in the pocket without requiring extensive manual adjustment. The sample selection prioritizes mellow, jazz-influenced textures over aggressive percussive elements, making this expansion particularly suited for producers working in conscious hip hop, neo-soul, and downtempo genres.

Technically, the expansion functions as a full compatibility layer within Native Instruments' MPC software and hardware platforms. Users gain immediate access to curated drum patterns, synthesizer presets, and vocal snippets without the friction of external sample management. The vinyl-influenced processing - achieved through saturation and harmonic distortion modeling - consistently produces results that feel cohesive across mixed kit selections.
This tool occupies a specific niche rather than attempting broad utility. Producers seeking authentic 90s MPC workflows or those developing modern productions with vintage sensibilities will find substantial value in the kit consistency and pre-processed sonic coherence. For engineers prioritizing maximum sound design flexibility or working outside hip hop and soul contexts, more modular sample packs or individual sound design tools may prove more practical. The expansion succeeds most when treated as a starting point for focused production rather than a comprehensive toolkit.
