About this plugin
Native Instruments' Millennium Hip Hop expansion delivers a curated sound set anchored in late 90s and early 00s production aesthetics. The 160-loop collection prioritizes the era's defining characteristics: off-kilter drum programming, sparse arrangements, and the textural interplay between organic instrumentation and digital processing that defined Timbaland, Missy Elliott, and Dilla-influenced production.
The kit composition reveals a thoughtful architecture for working at hip hop tempos. Eighty-six drum and percussion loops form the foundation, paired with ten bass lines that demonstrate the swing and syncopation essential to the period. The twenty-eight synth and keys loops avoid obviousness, instead offering layered, processed textures suited to arrangement rather than standalone melodic statements. Orchestral samples (nineteen loops) and guitars (eight) add dimensionality without sacrificing the minimalist approach that defined the era's production philosophy.

Performance-wise, Leap's core loop-manipulation tools - pitch twisting, time-stretching, and slicing at the press of a key - translate effectively to hip hop production, where subtle timing adjustments and sample manipulation remain fundamental. The included effects designed for "happy accidents" serve producers seeking organic variation within programmed structures.
This expansion suits producers already familiar with loop-based workflows who seek period-specific source material without heavy customization. Its strength lies not in authenticity recreation but in providing starting points that capture the sonic attitudes of the era. Compared to general-purpose loop libraries, the focused genre lens makes it more immediately useful for artists working within Millennium aesthetics, though its 160-loop count may feel limiting for extended projects without supplementary sources.
