About this plugin
Karriem Riggins Drums is Native Instruments' drum plugin centered on the aesthetic and workflow of the acclaimed producer and jazz drummer. The library contains one-shots and kit configurations sourced from sessions at Sunset Sound's Studio 3, processed through modular gear, tape machines, and spring reverbs to achieve tonal character that avoids the clinical quality common in digital drum libraries.
The plugin's interface prioritizes hands-on control over menu diving. Swing and tightness parameters let producers adjust groove feel in real time, while preset grooves and patterns curated by Riggins himself serve as starting points rather than finished solutions. The drag-and-drop functionality allows patterns to be exported directly into your DAW for further customization, maintaining the tool's emphasis on active creation rather than passive selection.

Sonically, the kit leans toward the warm, compressed textures favored in contemporary hip hop and jazz fusion. Drums occupy a deliberately processed middle ground - organic enough to suggest real playing, but saturated enough to sit prominently in dense mixes without excessive EQ work. The palette ranges from tight, punchy kicks to textured percussion hits that reflect Riggins' background working with producers like J Dilla and Madlib.
This plugin works best for producers comfortable with sampling-based workflows who value tonal cohesion and groove pocket over vast kit variety. While the sound design carries distinct character that may not suit every production aesthetic, its constraints actually encourage creative problem-solving. For beat makers and hip hop producers seeking inspiration from a respected figure in the genre, Karriem Riggins Drums offers a genuinely useful window into professional-grade drum selection and processing philosophy.
