About this plugin
Borough Chops captures the sonic DNA of East Coast hip hop production through a carefully curated collection of sampled instruments and drum kits processed with classic gear. The expansion delivers 50 MASCHINE kits and 56 BATTERY kits alongside 290 loops and 480 one-shots, all centered on the aesthetic of 1990s New York boom bap.
The core sonic character emerges from deliberate use of vintage sampling workflow. Horns carry a characteristically swirled, saturated quality suggesting tape compression and analog saturation, while the melodic elements - stacked keys and meditative chord progressions - reflect the jazz and soul source material typical of the era. The drum programming prioritizes shuffle and swing over rigid quantization, with snare cracks and kick drums positioned to encourage head-nodding rather than dancefloor precision.

This expansion works best for producers working within or drawing reference from hip hop, neo-soul, and jazz-influenced electronic music. The kits and loops provide immediate starting points for beat construction, though experienced producers will find the individual one-shots most useful for layering and customization. The 5 MASSIVE presets offer harmonic and textural variety without dominating the mix.
Compared to competitors like Loopmasters' hip hop collections or Splice's sample packs, Borough Chops distinguishes itself through tighter curation and consistent processing quality. The gear choices - implied through the characteristic coloration - feel intentional rather than arbitrary. For those building within this specific sonic framework, the cohesion across kits and loops justifies the investment.
