About this plugin
Battery 4 stands as Native Instruments' flagship drum sampler, built primarily for electronic music production where sample manipulation and kit customization drive creative decisions. At its core, the plugin functions as a sample-based drum machine with deep editing capabilities and integrated processing, rather than a traditional effects unit despite its classification.
The interface prioritizes workflow efficiency through color-coded sample organization and instantaneous kit assembly. The seven sample playback modes, including classic sampler and groovebox emulations, provide tonal flexibility across different production contexts. The Time Machine Pro algorithm handles time-stretching with minimal artifacts, a critical feature when adapting samples across tempos without sacrificing transient integrity.

Battery 4's integrated effects chain - featuring SOLID EQ, SOLID BUS COMP, TRANSIENT MASTER, tape saturation, LoFi processing, and convolution reverb - delivers legitimate sonic character rather than mere convenience. The ability to apply effects to individual cells, group them, or process the master output, combined with drag-and-drop sidechaining across four busses, enables sophisticated mixing within the plugin itself.
The plugin serves producers who prioritize speed in beat assembly and sound designers seeking granular sample control. Its market position reflects widespread adoption in electronic, hip-hop, and urban music production, where kit customization and fast iteration matter most. The extensive expansion library, organized by genre, reduces the overhead of sourcing appropriate sounds.
Battery 4 competes directly with Maschine for sample-based production but maintains independence as a plugin, making it suitable for DAW-centric workflows where hardware integration isn't required.
