About this plugin
Action Strings 2 represents Native Instruments' refined approach to orchestral string sampling, leveraging phrase-based synthesis rather than traditional note-by-note sample triggering. The instrument ships with over 1,370 dynamically recorded phrases sourced from professional string ensembles, captured across multiple microphone positions to preserve spatial detail and tonal complexity. This architectural choice positions it distinctly within the sampling landscape, prioritizing compositional fluidity over granular control of individual articulations.
The sonic character leans deliberately toward cinematic applications. Strings carry natural resonance and ensemble cohesion, with sufficient dynamic range to convey both delicate passages and aggressive swell articulations. The multi-mic approach allows blending between close, mid, and room perspectives, enabling users to shape everything from intimate chamber textures to orchestral grandeur without leaving the interface.

For film composers and television scorists working under time constraints, Action Strings 2 excels. The phrase library accelerates compositional iteration, allowing rapid prototyping of dramatic sequences. Sound designers working in game audio will find the articulation breadth serviceable, though the emphasis on pre-recorded phrases means less real-time flexibility than dedicated string plugins offering individual note control.
Relative to competitors, Action Strings 2 occupies middle ground between fully sampled orchestral libraries and modular string synthesis tools. It sacrifices some note-level customization for speed and coherence. The multi-mic positioning and phrase blending distinguish it from simpler sample-playback instruments, making it particularly valuable for producers prioritizing authentic ensemble behavior alongside efficient workflow.
