About this plugin
Punch is Minimal System Group's take on solid-state FET compression, modeled after the classic 1176AE limiting amplifier. The plugin captures the essential character of that venerable hardware unit - specifically its ultra-fast attack times and the particular harmonic coloration that made the original a studio standard across rock, hip-hop, and pop production for decades.
The core appeal lies in its straightforward compression architecture. Four selectable ratios (2:1, 4:1, 8:1, and 20:1) cover everything from gentle tone-shaping to brick-wall limiting, while the attack and release controls remain intuitive and musically responsive. What distinguishes Punch from simpler compressor emulations is the FET gain reduction modeling, which imparts the characteristic "color" that engineers prize in hardware FET designs - a subtle harmonic enhancement that sits naturally in dense mixes rather than calling attention to itself.

The input and output gain controls allow for proper gain staging, while the custom output transformer emulation adds a final layer of analog character. The professionally designed GUI provides multiple metering options, letting you monitor compression behavior visually without cluttering the workspace.
Punch excels on drums, where its fast response captures transients cleanly while maintaining punch and presence. It's equally effective on bass, vocals, and full mixes when used judiciously. The preset library from Kendal Osborne offers solid starting points across common sources.
For Windows-based producers seeking a transparent yet characterful compressor with genuine utility across multiple sources, Punch delivers solid FET compression without unnecessary complexity or inflated pricing.
