About this plugin
McDSP's ML4000 remains one of the most capable mastering limiters available for DAW-based workflows. This upgrade path targets existing v6 users seeking access to the refined algorithms and interface improvements of the current generation.
The plugin architecture consists of two complementary processors: the ML1 mastering limiter and the ML4 multi-band dynamics engine feeding into it. The ML1 employs a brick wall look-ahead design with multi-stage peak detection, delivering transparent limiting that maintains transient integrity while offering aggressive compression modes when needed. The Knee and Mode controls provide genuine sonic flexibility rather than superficial parameter tweaking.

The ML4 extends capability across four frequency bands with independent gate, expander, and compressor sections per band. This architecture allows precise spectral dynamics management - controlling low-end mud without affecting midrange clarity, for instance - while steep 24 dB/octave crossovers minimize the phase and leakage artifacts common in poorly designed multi-band processors.
The Native v7 upgrade brings optimization for Apple Silicon processors and current Intel architectures alongside double-precision processing and real-time frequency analyzers that display input, output, or dynamics effect overlaid on the graphically adjustable crossover. Zero-latency operation and analog saturation modeling round out the feature set.
For mastering engineers, mix finalists, and anyone managing peaks across broadcast or streaming standards, the ML4000 delivers the control and sonic character expected at this tier. It competes effectively against significantly more expensive hardware emulations while maintaining the workflow advantages of plugin-based processing.
