About this plugin
The 4040 Retro Limiter represents McDSP's approach to dynamic control that prioritizes musical restraint over transparent limitation. Rather than disappearing into your mix, this plugin applies deliberate harmonic coloration through its analog saturation modeling and proprietary output stage topology, which handles peaks while introducing a controlled, smooth distortion character at any level. This design philosophy makes it equally useful as a protective limiter and a tone-shaping tool.
The zero-latency algorithm and look-ahead brick wall function handle fast transients without introducing audible artifacts or delay, critical for real-time work and printed takes. The double precision processing ensures that internal calculations maintain integrity even after multiple instances or aggressive limiting scenarios. Up to 36 dB of gain staging flexibility provides substantial headroom for both conservative limiting and more aggressive compression coloration.

The HD version optimized for AAX DSP systems takes advantage of your Pro Tools HD hardware investment, offloading processing while delivering the same algorithm quality as its Native counterpart. This makes it practical for mixing large sessions without accumulating CPU load.
The 4040 suits engineers seeking vintage character in their limiting, particularly those tracking vocals, bass, or drums where a limiter that adds presence rather than subtracting it proves valuable. Compared to transparent brick-wall limiters, it trades surgical precision for musicality. The updated interface and preset library reflect current production standards while maintaining the sonic signature that established McDSP's reputation for saturation modeling that actually translates to finished work.
