About this plugin
SAWmonium is a Kontakt instrument that samples and processes bowed woodsaws, hacksaws, and mitre saws played with cello bows, mallets, and various striking implements. Loot Audio has packaged ten patches from this unconventional sound source into a playable instrument with genuine cinematic utility.
The core appeal lies in the sustained tones, which respond well to pitch modulation and reveal character somewhere between a glass harmonica and metallic percussion depending on how you engage the attack. The bowed sustains are tuned and looped for melodic or textural use, making them considerably more practical than novelty sound libraries typically offer. Growls, staccato articulations, and processed effects round out the patch selection, including a deliberate reference to Hans Zimmer's Joker motif from The Dark Knight.

The interface provides real control: pitch adjustment, attack and delay parameters, multiband EQ, and thirteen convolution impulse responses selectable directly from the GUI. This goes beyond window dressing - the impulse responses meaningfully shape the character of each patch, allowing producers to shift between intimate and cavernous presentations without diving into deep menus.
SAWmonium functions best for composers working in horror, thriller, and experimental music contexts. The patches integrate well into textural underscores rather than serving as primary melodic elements, though the sustained tones have enough tonal definition to anchor certain compositional moments. Producers accustomed to atypical sound sources will find the processing overhead minimal and the sonic palette cohesive.
Requires the full version of Kontakt - Kontakt Player is not supported.
