About this plugin
Expressive E's Soliste DBS 1130 extends the publisher's physically modeled string instrument line into lower registers with a double bass voiced for orchestral depth and contemporary expressiveness. Built on the same real-time modeling architecture that distinguishes the Soliste violin and viol, the DBS 1130 captures the harmonic complexity and tonal nuance essential to bass performance while maintaining responsiveness across the full range of gestural control that MPE controllers provide.
The instrument excels at reproducing the mechanical character of bowed bass articulation - the weight of the bow against the string, the harmonic bloom of vibrato, and the textural shifts between dynamic playing styles. Rather than relying on sampled tones, the physical model allows performers to shape bow response, vibrato behavior, and body resonance in real-time, making it suitable for both scoring applications and live instrumental expression. The DBS 1130 responds optimally to the Osmose synthesizer and other MPE devices, though it remains functional on standard MIDI controllers.

This tool addresses a gap in the market for physically modeled bass instruments with genuine expressive control. While orchestral libraries offer extensive sampled bass articulations, few provide the real-time malleability that modern composition and performance demand. For producers seeking authentic bass textures without the latency or workflow friction of layering samples, or for performers wanting gestural control over timbre and dynamics, the DBS 1130 provides a compelling alternative. It integrates seamlessly into hybrid orchestral arrangements and works equally well in contemporary scoring contexts where expression demands exceed conventional sample-based limitations.
