About this plugin
The bx_XL V3 represents a maturation of mid/side mastering dynamics control. Rather than applying a single limiter across the stereo field, this plugin splits the midrange into two frequency-dependent bands while preserving independent side-channel processing, then funnels all three through a true peak limiter. The result is four limiting stages operating in parallel and series, offering control density that conventional stereo limiters cannot match.
The technical approach addresses a real mixing problem: kick drums and bass typically demand different dynamic treatment than vocal presence and cymbals, yet they occupy the same mid channel. The adjustable crossover frequency lets you separate these elements, applying distinct limiting characteristics to each. This proves essential for dance and hip-hop production, where percussive impact and clarity must coexist at high loudness levels.

The XL saturation topology adds harmonic content through third and fifth-order generation with aliasing prevention, warming the sound without inflating peak levels. This subtle enhancement of perceived loudness separates the bx_XL V3 from clinical limiters that simply constrain.
The metering suite - incorporating true peak, LUFS, gain reduction, RMS, and correlation analysis - positions this as a serious mastering tool rather than a mix-bus utility. The Phase-X crossover filters inherited from the V2 maintain phase coherence during mid/side separation, critical for preventing the transparency artifacts that plague cheaper M/S implementations.
Mastering engineers and mix engineers targeting commercial loudness will find this plugin's specificity worthwhile. It demands some technical literacy but rewards expertise with transparent, punchy results that simpler limiters struggle to achieve.
