About this plugin
The bx_XL V2 is a mid-side mastering limiter engineered to address a persistent problem in loudness processing: achieving competitive levels without sacrificing mix coherence or introducing audible distortion. By splitting the stereo field into three independently controlled channels - side, mid-low, and mid-high - it enables targeted dynamic control that conventional limiters cannot match. The mid-low crossover point adjusts freely, making it possible to isolate and process the kick drum separately from upper-midrange content, a crucial capability for bass-heavy genres like EDM, hip-hop, and rock.
The plugin's architecture includes four limiting stages: three operating on the mid-side decomposed signal, plus a final brick wall limiter on the stereo output. This redundancy prevents the aggressive compression artifacts typical of single-stage approaches. A saturation circuit adds harmonic distortion in controlled amounts, increasing perceived loudness through the addition of musical overtones rather than pure level boosting.

The metering suite is comprehensive, featuring a three-band psychoacoustic loudness analyzer alongside traditional level displays and the ability to solo mid and side channels with phase-coherent crossover filters. This transparency makes gain staging decisions informed rather than guesswork.
The bx_XL V2 is purpose-built for mastering engineers seeking loud, competitive mixes without compromise. It's equally valuable in mixing contexts where surgical control over stereo width and bass definition matters. While not the only tool of its type, it remains the most feature-complete mid-side limiter available, with metering and decomposition methods that warrant its premium positioning.
