About this plugin
Black Rooster Audio's VLA Bundle consolidates three distinct opto-electronic and FET compression topologies into a single toolkit, offering engineers granular control over dynamic processing across the frequency spectrum and signal chain. The collection comprises the VLA-2A Mark II, VLA-3A, and VLA-FET, each addressing different sonic requirements with varying response characteristics and circuit topologies.
The VLA-2A Mark II delivers the classic tube-based optical compression sound of the 1960s original, characterized by smooth gain reduction and musical musicality that integrates seamlessly into dense mixes without obvious artifacts. The VLA-3A refines this approach with solid-state circuitry and faster attack times, providing tighter control while maintaining the tonal coloration expected from optical designs. The VLA-FET introduces FET-based compression with exceptional speed, enabling precise transient shaping on material requiring aggressive gain reduction without audible pumping.

This bundle serves mix engineers and mastering professionals who recognize that compression character matters as much as compression ratio. Rather than forcing material through a single compressor algorithm, the VLA Bundle accommodates source-specific requirements: vocals and bass benefit from the musical character of the 2A and 3A variants, while drums and percussive elements respond well to the VLA-FET's instantaneous response.
The emulations are notably faithful to their hardware references, employing detailed circuit modeling that captures harmonic coloration alongside dynamic behavior. For professionals seeking authentic vintage compression without hardware costs or maintenance requirements, the VLA Bundle represents a practical standard for dynamic control that holds up across professional production and mastering environments.
