About this plugin
BFD Player Expansion: Jazz Brushes delivers a meticulously sampled brushed drum kit rooted in vintage jazz and popular music aesthetics. This expansion captures the Camco Oaklawn drumset, a 1960s-era kit chosen for its responsive shell characteristics and warm tonal palette, recorded with brush articulation across kick, toms, snare, and cymbals. The sonic approach emphasizes the textural nuance that brush playing introduces: the swish and sweep of bristles against drum heads, the subtle pitch variations in hi-hat closure, and the articulate scraping on cymbals that define jazz, funk, and blues vocabularies.
The kit includes a comprehensive cymbal selection anchored by Istanbul instruments - a 24-inch ride for cutting midrange presence, an 18-inch dark crash for controlled decay, and a 14-inch hi-hat for crisp articulation. This pairing reflects contemporary jazz recording practice while maintaining flexibility across blues and contemporary R&B contexts where brushed drums have resurged.

Jazz Brushes suits producers and engineers seeking authentic brush textures without relying on samples or inferior synthesis approximations. The articulation capture proves particularly valuable for composing in lounge, bossa nova, and sophisticated funk genres where brush dynamics drive the groove's character rather than serving as ornamentation. Compared to general drum libraries, this expansion sacrifices the broad palette of stick-struck variations in exchange for deep specialization in brush playing - a deliberate trade-off that benefits those prioritizing authenticity in jazz-adjacent production.
