About this plugin
Balkan Sax is a sample-based alto saxophone instrument developed by Have Audio and performed by virtuoso reed player Achille Succi. The library comprises 1,074 samples across 18 articulations, delivered in Native Instruments' compressed .ncw format with a total uncompressed footprint of 530.2 MB.
The articulation set reflects both traditional saxophone technique and stylistically specific ornamentations. Beyond standard sustained tones with controllable vibrato and three levels of staccato articulation ( single, double, and triple tonguing ), the instrument includes half-tone and whole-tone mordents in both short and long forms, upward and downward glissandi, and a dedicated "Special Balkan articulation" that captures the idiomatic flourishes characteristic of Eastern European folk expression. Tempo-synced approach note groups and a Balkan phrase articulation add harmonic and rhythmic context without requiring extensive manual sequencing.

The interface prioritizes accessibility with a straightforward keyswitch system and integrated effects processing. Two reverb algorithms ( room and hall ), delay, and a gritty distortion pedal emulation provide practical sound-shaping options, though serious mixing engineers will likely route outputs to their preferred external processing chains.
Sonically, Succi's performance captures the warmth and expressiveness expected from a professional reed player, with the vibrato articulations conveying genuine dynamic variation rather than synthetic modulation. The library excels in world music, film scoring, and genre-fusion contexts where Eastern European saxophone character serves the composition. For producers seeking authentic Balkan instrumental color without extensive performance technique, this instrument delivers immediate usability with sufficient tonal depth for serious production work.
