About this plugin
Balkan Clarinet is a sampled Bb clarinet instrument built on over 1,600 recordings of virtuoso reed player Achille Succi performing in idiomatic Balkan and Eastern European styles. The plugin captures the instrument's full range with 18 articulations accessible via keyswitch, spanning conventional playing techniques such as sustain, staccato variations, and mordents alongside distinctly regional embellishments including short glissandos, strong vibrato, and a dedicated "special Balkan articulation." Notably, the library includes two tempo-synced approach note groups and a tempo-synced Balkan phrase, allowing articulated melody lines to lock rhythmically with your session without manual timing adjustment.
The sampling approach prioritizes realism over synthesis, with minimal processing at the source. The instrument's character reflects traditional Balkan clarinet performance - breathy articulation, expressive intonation bending, and the warm, slightly woody tone typical of the idiom. The built-in effects suite includes room and hall reverb algorithms, delay, and a gritty distortion circuit designed to add edge or break clarity when needed, though these feel somewhat secondary to the core samples.

Balkan Clarinet works well for composers and producers working in world music, film scoring, or any context requiring authentic Eastern European or Balkan textures. While specialized in approach, the broad articulation set makes it serviceable beyond strict traditional music applications. The intuitive interface and ready-to-play character minimize setup time. Its primary limitation is stylistic focus - this excels as a Balkan specialist rather than as a general-purpose clarinet suitable for classical or jazz contexts.
