About this plugin
AudioThing's Outer Space 2 is a meticulously engineered emulation of the Roland Space Echo RE-201, the tape delay and spring reverb unit that defined the sound of dub reggae, psychedelic rock, and experimental electronic music throughout the 1970s and beyond. The plugin captures the essential character of tape-based delay: organic saturation, frequency-dependent degradation, and the subtle pitch modulation artifacts that made the original hardware sonically distinctive and immediately recognizable.
The core strength lies in its tape modeling, which offers three distinct variants - original RT-1L formulation, a modern replacement tape, and a deliberately worn specimen. Each affects harmonic content and feedback behavior differently, with wow and flutter characteristics that shift dynamically based on repeat rate settings. This isn't merely cosmetic; the interaction between tape selection and delay time creates authentic pitch shifting effects reminiscent of the Doppler effect, a defining characteristic of classic tape echo work.

The mode selector provides twelve routing combinations across three playback heads and the spring reverb tank, allowing users to dial in everything from pure echo to integrated reverb treatments. The plugin includes configurable spring reverb with dark/bright and decay controls, plus background noise generation that emulates tape hiss with dynamic envelope shaping.
Outer Space 2 is essential for producers and engineers seeking authentic analog character without the maintenance, storage, and reliability concerns of vintage hardware. It outperforms generic delay plugins through its methodical attention to nonlinear tape behavior. For dub, psychedelia, experimental music, and anyone pursuing analog authenticity in the box, it remains the most convincing RE-201 emulation available.
