About this plugin
Phosphor 3 is Audio Damage's modernized interpretation of the alphaSyntauri, the pioneering additive synthesis engine that defined early 80s digital sound design. Rather than emulating the original's hardware constraints, this plugin rebuilds the architecture for contemporary workflows while preserving the core sonic character that made the alphaSyntauri distinctive.
The synthesis engine employs dual voices, each with its own additive wavetable oscillator capable of up to 16 partials, supplemented by noise sources and independent delay lines. Two selectable resolution modes allow users to toggle between low-res operation that captures the original's characteristic digital grit and high-resolution processing for extended harmonic content. Cross-modulation between oscillators and FM capabilities inherited from the Synclavier add substantial depth to the basic additive framework.

Modulation facilities center on two LFOs offering multiple waveforms plus randomization, each deployable globally or per-note basis. The modal routing interface simplifies assignment of MIDI, MPE, and randomized modulation offsets across available parameters. Version 3's expanded feature set includes full MPE support, TUN-file compatibility for non-equal-tempered tunings, and a redesigned preset browser.
Phosphor 3 appeals primarily to sound designers and musicians with interest in additive synthesis history and experimental timbre creation. The plugin occupies a specific niche - neither a comprehensive modern additive synth nor a strict emulation, but rather a practical bridge between vintage digital aesthetics and current production flexibility. For those seeking characterful, distinctly digital textures with genuine historical roots, Phosphor 3 remains an articulate and capable tool.
