About this plugin
Audified's U73b plugin authentically recreates one of broadcast engineering's most enduring tools. The original German unit earned its reputation through decades of reliable, musical compression in European radio stations and mastering suites, where its gentle character and predictable behavior made it indispensable for protecting signal chains without audible pumping.
The plugin captures the device's defining sonic signature: a modelled tube circuit that imparts subtle harmonic coloration while maintaining transparency across frequency ranges. Unlike aggressive modern compressors, the U73b operates with a naturally soft knee and gentle ratio in compressor mode, making it exceptionally forgiving on material requiring protection without obvious dynamic processing. The limiter mode tightens considerably for sources demanding transparent ceiling enforcement.

The architecture prioritizes workflow efficiency. Program-dependent release times accommodate different source material automatically, while fixed options provide consistency across sessions. The high-pass filter toggle meaningfully alters character - vintage mode colors the low end, modern position cleans it - a useful distinction for genre-dependent mixing approaches. External sidechain capability extends utility beyond straightforward gain reduction.
This tool suits mastering applications where subtle, musical gain reduction preserves mix integrity, and tracking scenarios requiring transparent protection without character alteration. It works equally well on stereo buses or individual sources. While not suited for aggressive dynamic reshaping, the U73b excels where restraint and analog character matter more than dramatic effect.
The plugin occupies a specific niche dominated by few competitors. For engineers seeking the broadcast compressor aesthetic without hardware investment or maintenance, it represents a genuine, competent solution backed by meticulous emulation work.
