About this plugin
Arturia's Rev PLATE-140 is a circuit-accurate software emulation of the EMT 140, the foundational plate reverb that defined professional studio sound for decades. Rather than offering a single algorithm, the plugin models three distinct plate units sourced and analyzed from working hardware, each with measurable differences in resonance and character. This multi-model approach provides genuine sonic variety without the computational overhead of parametric modeling.
The plugin's architecture reflects the original's signal path, including a vacuum tube preamp stage that contributes subtle harmonic coloration to the input signal. Three core parameters - decay time, damping, and pre-delay - allow straightforward control over reverb character and spatial placement. Beyond these essentials, a chorus circuit can add movement to the reverb tail, while separate pre-filtering and post-reverb EQ sections facilitate tone shaping without invasive processing.

Sonically, the Rev PLATE-140 excels on vocals where its smooth, evolving decay creates dimension without harshness. Drums benefit from the plate's natural air and cohesion across a full kit. The plugin's particular strength lies in its ability to glue disparate mix elements through spatial and harmonic means rather than heavy compression or excessive processing.
For mixing engineers accustomed to hardware plate reverbs, the Rev PLATE-140 provides familiar workflow and genuine tonal alternatives. Producers working primarily in the box will find it a capable foundation reverb that handles everything from conservative enhancement to more textural applications. It represents a meaningful alternative to convolution reverbs while maintaining the computational efficiency of algorithmic processing.
