About this plugin
Arturia's Comp VCA-65 is a software emulation of the DBX 165A, a solid-state VCA compressor that defined aggressive rhythm section processing throughout the 1970s and beyond. Using TAE modeling, Arturia has captured the unit's distinctive character: its soft-knee "Over Easy" compression curve, predictive attack-decay detection, and notably, its peakstop limiter - a circuit that adds harmonic coloration when pushed hard rather than simply clamping peaks.
The 165A occupied a specific niche in professional studios. Unlike gentler, more transparent compressors, it was engineered specifically for drums and bass, delivering obvious movement and attitude. The auto attack-decay feature eliminated guesswork, while the VCA's inherent coloration added color even at moderate ratios. The peakstop limiter's behavior is crucial to its appeal - it doesn't just prevent clipping but actively shapes transients with a slight crunch that feels natural rather than digital.

Comp VCA-65 is best suited to producers and engineers working with electronic music, hip-hop, or rock who want vintage character without the hunt for functioning hardware. The plugin excels on drums, where its predictable behavior and quick responsiveness shine. It also works surprisingly well on full mixes and bass, situations where its moderate aggression prevents the over-compression artifacts of harder limiters.
Among VCA compressor emulations, the 165A's particular sonic signature - less surgical than an 1176, more characterful than modern DBX units - gives it particular appeal. For those specifically seeking the 165A's vintage crunch and intelligent dynamics detection, this is the most authentic path.
