About this plugin
Stay-Levin is Antelope Audio's digital emulation of a rare 1960s variable-mu tube compressor that defined the sound of golden-age radio production. Rather than pursuing transparent dynamics control, this plugin prioritizes musical coloration, making it particularly effective on sources that benefit from vintage character and presence enhancement.
The compression topology employs a vari-mu design, which means the tube's bias determines gain reduction. This approach produces a soft-knee response with an inherently musical quality - ratio and attack characteristics shift subtly as signal levels change, lending a natural, organic feel to dynamics control. The circuitry adds harmonic saturation and subtle distortion that warms even clinical sources without introducing obvious artifacts.

Sonically, Stay-Levin excels on bass and vocals, where its punchy low-end response and creamy midrange deliver the presence and glue engineers have chased for decades. The airy high-end works surprisingly well across drums and horns, while guitarists will appreciate its ability to enhance lead articulation without sacrificing sustain.
The interface strips away unnecessary parameters - two knobs and two switches provide intuitive control over ratio and output alongside input/output metering. This simplicity reflects the original's design philosophy while avoiding the overwhelming feature set that characterizes many modern compressors.
For producers and engineers seeking authentic analog compression character without hardware costs or maintenance headaches, Stay-Levin occupies a distinctive niche. It's not a surgical tool for transparent gain riding, but rather a tone shaper designed to enhance and enliven recordings with genuine vintage warmth and presence.
