About this plugin
The AIR Solina plugin models the classic Solina string synthesizer, a fixture of progressive rock and film scoring since the 1970s. Rather than relying on sample playback alone, Solina employs proprietary dynamic modeling that combines optimized sampling with synthesis techniques to achieve responsive, nuanced recreations of its source instrument's six timbres: contrabass, cello, viola, violin, trumpet, and horn.
The plugin's core strength lies in its ability to blend these voices independently, each with dedicated volume, pan, and pitch controls. This architecture invites layering and detuning strategies that yield lush, dimensional textures beyond what the original hardware could produce. The Flavour section adds practical lo-fi treatments, applying spectral characteristics of vintage radios, telephones, and tape machines alongside saturation and flutter effects - useful for those seeking character without external plugin chains.

The effects processing is competent: spring reverb, delay, chorus, compressor, and four-band EQ are all solidly implemented. These feel more functional than exceptional, serving their purpose without demanding attention.
Solina suits producers working in orchestral mockup, progressive arrangements, and any context requiring authentic vintage string machine character. The 75 presets provide reasonable starting points, though experienced sound designers will spend meaningful time with parameter editing to unlock the plugin's full potential.
As a modeling tool, it sits alongside competitors like Arturia's Prophet V and Spitfire's vintage synthesizer offerings. Solina's tonal palette skews warmer and less aggressively digital than many modern recreations, making it valuable for engineers prioritizing immediate musicality over technical novelty.
